What were the causes of the crusades?

There were many causes, the primary ones being political and economic. The Eastern Church agreed that they would recognize the pope if the pope would aid the crumbling Byzantine empire. At the same time, the pope was looking for a way to stop infighting in Europe. Many also rallied behind the ability to keep what they took from any Muslims, mainly land. This rallied many European kings behind the crusades as well.
